You can rest assured that every product from Johnson & Johnson is mild and effective when used as directed. Each ingredient that goes into our products is not only tested and evaluated for safety by us, but also meet or exceed government safety requirements in every country where they are sold. We’re always listening to feedback from mums and dads like you, and we’re also monitoring the latest scientific data to make sure our products are as mild and gentle as can be.

We usually use fragrances in our products to leave skin with that beautiful, “baby” scent that parents love. In all cases, strict requirements are in place to ensure that our ingredients are suitable for your baby’s delicate skin. We only use fragrances that conform to international standards for fragrance safety, which is certified by our suppliers.

We've been listening to you, and that's why we've made a public pledge to reduce or eliminate certain ingredients in our products worldwide. We're pleased to have met our 2013 Safety and Care Commitment to remove formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and reduce traces of 1,4 dioxane from all of our baby products, everywhere around the world.

Parabens are naturally occurring preservatives that can be found in fruits and vegetables. There are many different types of parabens, which have excellent safety records and have been used in personal care products for more than fifty years. Still, we understand that mums have preferences when it comes to ingredients, so even though scientists and regulators have verified their safety, we've made a commitment to phase parabens out of all of our baby products by 2015. We're making this change so those who choose our products can have complete peace of mind about them.

The safety of your family is our first priority. Preservatives ensure a product's quality and freshness. Unfortunately, warm, moist bathroom environments are perfect breeding grounds for microorganisms, and so we use preservatives to protect our products against bacteria and contamination.

Vegetable oils contain unsaturated fatty acids, which can go rancid. While mineral oils do not. When used as a moisturiser, our highly refined mineral oil has been proven to relieve dryness and keep skin soft. It is specifically developed for baby’s delicate skin, and is also suitable for adults.

As with the ingredients in all JOHNSON'S® baby products, the quality and safety requirements used for selection of mineral oils are of the highest standard.

None of the products in the JOHNSON'S® baby range in Australia/New Zealand have been formulated with phthalates (an organic chemical produced from oil). In fact, we have removed phthalates from our baby products on a worldwide basis.

We don't use Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in any of our JOHNSON'S® baby products. We do sometimes use a cleanser called Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), which has a similar-sounding name, but is very different. This ingredient helps our products foam up in the bath whilst still being mild and gentle for baby's skin.

Although we think that using natural and naturally derived ingredients is important, there are times when synthetic ingredients are a better alternative.

It’s important to remember that not all natural ingredients are safe. Certain ingredients can be affected by unpredictable changes in quality and can be subject to contamination, and some of the strongest known allergenic substances come from plants. Natural and naturally derived ingredients are used in our products, but only if they meet our strict quality standards.

JOHNSON'S® baby products sold in Australia/New Zealand are not tested on animals. We also follow the EU animal testing ban worldwide and do not test cosmetic ingredients on animals, except for cases where testing is required by law or government authorities.

As a company, we're committed to both supporting work to eliminate the use of animal testing, and developing alternative, non-animal research methods.

Because of their delayed blink and tear reflexes, babies are less able than adults to protect their eyes and rinse out harsh substances. This is something we're very conscious of, and it's why we created our NO MORE TEARS® range.

For a product to earn our NO MORE TEARS® stamp, it must pass through 4 strict stages of testing:

  • Ingredient & formulation review
  • Pre-clinical safety evaluation
  • Human ocular test
  • Medical review

We do this to make sure it's as mild on your baby's sensitive eyes, and only then do we give it the special stamp that's been trusted by generations of mums.

A baby's skin is much more delicate than an adult's, and it requires a bit of extra special care. This is why we make sure that every single JOHNSON'S® baby product is clinically proven mild, and that it can carry this unique stamp.

To earn this stamp, a product needs to pass through four strict clinical tests. These tests are done to minimize

  • irritation
  • an allergic reaction
  • Irritated skin when exposed to sunlight
  • an allergic reaction when exposed to sunlight

Conducting these tests is a process that can take many months and thousands of hours. Only after a product has passed all four will we stamp it, and allow it to be used on your little one's beautiful skin.

Colours are sometimes used to make our products look a little nicer, and to help distinguish between products to prevent mix-ups. The amounts we use are minimal and can be as low as 0.0002%, and in all cases we've made sure that these colours are gentle enough and suitable to use on baby’s delicate skin.
